Through-Hole Padstack Calculator
Plated through-hole sizing after IPC-7251, IPC-2221 and IPC-2222: finished hole, outer and inner pads, antipad, thermal relief and the annular ring achieved, for density levels A, B and C.
Method, formulas and references
A note on names: this calculator labels the density-level values “IPC-7251”, the name land-pattern libraries publish them under. IPC-7251 itself was never released; the committee stopped work on it in October 2014 and moved through-hole land patterns into IPC-7351C (T. Hausherr, PCB Libraries forum, 2014). The through-hole hole and pad size guide traces each value to its source.
Hole
The finished (plated) hole is the maximum lead diameter plus an allowance that depends on the density level. A rectangular lead uses its diagonal √(W2 + T2), because the corners must clear the hole.
| Feature | Level A | Level B | Level C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hole over max lead (IPC-2222 / IPC-7251) | 0.25 | 0.20 | 0.15 |
| Fabrication allowance, IPC-7251 land patterns | 0.60 | 0.50 | 0.40 |
| Fabrication allowance, IPC-2221 Table 9-1 | 0.40 | 0.25 | 0.20 |
| Thermal ID over hole (IPC-7251 chart) | 0.60 | 0.40 | 0.30 |
| Thermal OD / antipad over hole (IPC-7251 chart) | 1.00 | 0.70 | 0.50 |
All values in mm.
Lands
For a rectangular lead, the preview uses square lands and a square plane antipad around a round hole. Both sides equal the calculated minimum land or antipad size. IPC-2221 permits non-circular land shapes, and IPC-7251 defines the annular ring at its narrowest point. A longer rectangular land is a separate design choice; no lead-aspect extension is calculated. The thermal relief remains round.
IPC-2221 §9.1.1 gives the worst-case land-to-hole relationship:
Here a is the maximum finished hole (the drilled hole on internal layers), b is the minimum annular ring and c is the fabrication allowance. IPC-2221 Table 9-2 sets the minimum annular ring at 0.05 mm on external layers (supported holes) and 0.03 mm on internal layers. The notes to Table 9-1 add 0.05 mm per oz of copper above 1 oz and 0.05 mm above 8 layers. They are applied when the IPC-2221 basis is selected. IPC-7251 land patterns use larger allowances (0.6/0.5/0.4 mm) and the finished hole for a. The published worked example, a 0.55 mm lead at Level B, gives a 0.75 mm hole and a 1.35 mm pad. The IPC-7251 padstack default repeats the outer land on inner layers. This page reports the larger of that and the IPC-2221 internal minimum.
Planes
IPC-2222 §9.1.2: the total width of the thermal webs should be 60 % of the land diameter, divided among the spokes. The combined web of all planes on one hole should not exceed 4.0 mm for 1 oz copper (2.0 mm for 2 oz). The thermal ID and OD, and the rule that the plane clearance equals the thermal OD, come from the IPC-7251 padstack charts by PCB Matrix (T. Hausherr). They are a library convention, not a requirement of the IPC-2221/2222 text, which leaves thermal geometry to the designer. IPC-2221 §9.1.3 says only that the relationship between hole, land and web is critical.
Unverified defaults (editable)
- Drill oversize 0.10 mm. This is a conservative assumption for the plating allowance, not an IPC value. Ask your fabricator; many use 0.05–0.15 mm.
- Hole tolerance 0. This matches the IPC-7251 charts, which size the land from the nominal hole. Enter the fabricator’s plus tolerance to apply IPC-2221 strictly.
- IPC-7251 fabrication allowances and hole allowances. IPC-7251 itself was not available. These values come from secondary sources that agree with each other: the PCB Matrix chart, EDN and PCB 3D.
- Internal annular ring. 0.03 mm is from IPC-2221 (1998) Table 9-2. Secondary sources quote 0.025 mm for IPC-2221B.
- Maximum hole-to-lead difference. IPC-2222B Table 9-6 also caps the hole relative to the minimum lead (0.7 mm at Level B, per a secondary source). The page does not check this.
